Keyboard Shortcuts For Gmail, Twitter, Dropbox, Facebook & YouTube [Web]

at 18:16
Who doesn’t love a nice, convenient hotkey? I personally think the only thing that can replace keyboard shortcuts (on PCs and Macs), could be the ability to transmit commands via brain signals, and that doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon. Keyboard shortcuts have transcended beyond desktop, and work on many websites and web apps, making it easier to navigate them. Almost all popular sites support keyboard shortcuts, and the following is a simple compilation of keyboard shortcuts for Gmail, Twitter, Dropbox, Facebook, and YouTube, some of the most visited and used portals across the world wide web. Since they are shortcuts, there isn’t much of an opinion to have about them, but for what it’s worth, this list is arranged with respect to which site has the best to worst keyboard shortcuts.
Hotkeys-For-Facebook-Twitter-Gmail-Dropbox-YouTube

Gmail

Gmail is quite possibly one of the richest sites there are when it comes to supporting keyboard shortcuts. The list is virtually endless, and that’s why only the most frequently used ones are being listed here. The slightly tricky thing about these shortcuts is that they have to be enabled. Go to Gmail settings (the cog wheel to the top right), and turn keyboard shortcuts on in the General tab to get started.
c – Opens a new email for composing
n/p – Lets you move to the next or previous message within a conversation thread. This works only if you have an email thread open. It does not let you move to the next conversation thread
y and o – This shortcut works in a combination and allows you to archive the current email you are viewing and move to the next one
z – Lets you undo an action (provided undo is supported for it)
g and a – This is another combination shortcut and it allows you to quickly visit the All Mail tab
g and i – Takes you to your inbox
The list is fairly exhaustive, and these are some shortcuts that you would perhaps need more than the others. The complete list can be viewed here.

Twitter

Twitter definitely comes out on top as far as keyboard shortcuts on social media sites are concerned. If you took to using Twitter from its web interface after the recent redesign, you might just love the shortcuts even more. You can view a complete list of the shortcuts by hitting ? on the service’s interface, but here are the key commands for some of the most frequently used actions.
j/k – let you move between tweets
.  – Lets you refresh the page and move to the top of your timeline
n – Compose a new tweet
r – reply to a tweet
t – retweet
f – Favorite a tweet
Twitter shortcuts

Dropbox

The recent redesign and right-click functinoality support isn’t all that makes the service easy to use. Dropbox has very intelligently integrated keyboard shortcuts to make navigating files and folder super easy, or, as similar to viewing files on your desktop as possible.
The Up/Down arrow keys let you select the next or previous file. You can hold down the Shift key and continue on with either of these arrow keys to select multiple files in range
Control + a lets you select all files. If you’re using a Mac, you will use Command+a.
Escape – The escape key lets you unselect all selected files
Control + c/v – Dropbox supports the traditional copy/paste function for files and lets you easily move them between folders.
The left arrow key lets you go back a folder level and the Delete key lets you take a file out to dinner. Kidding, it deletes the file.
You can view the complete list anytime by hitting ?
Dropbox shortcuts

Facebook

Not many people know about Facebook’s keyboard shortcuts, and those that do know, probably try their best to forget them, since they are far from impressive. Of the five popular sites in this post, Facebook is the only one that relies on additional function keys, i.e., the Alt key for its shortcuts. Why is it so bad? Because Facebook and its shortcuts are used on the web interface, which is viewed in a web browser. Web browsers make extensive use of the Alt key, and that means you have different shortcuts for Chrome and Firefox.
Alt + ? – Focus the search bar
Alt + 1 – Go to your home page
Alt + 2 – Go to your profile page
Alt + 3 – Go to your friends’ page
Alt + 4 – Go to messages
Alt + 5 – Go to your Notifications page
The list goes on with Alt being used in combination with all 10 numbers; 6 for Account Settings, 7 for Privacy settings, 8 for the Facebook page, 9 for Facebook statements and the rights page (Facebook obviously thinks people will/should visit this page frequently enough to need a keyboard shortcut for it), and 0 for Facebook help center. Memorize them if you can. The only good shortcut it has is the L key that lets you like a photo when viewed in theater mode. Surprisingly, there is nothing that lets you quickly activate the status update field.
If you use the shortcuts in Firefox, you will need to use the Alt+Shift combination; for Mac, the Alt key will be replaced with the Ctrl key.

YouTube

As bad as Facebook’s shortcuts are, they nevertheless rely entirely on the keyboard. YouTube does things differently. The shortcuts that it supports are only for the player. For all other items, you have to tab through them one by one (as if it were the year 2000), and hit Enter to be able to engage them
The media player shortcuts are only half useful, since you have to make sure the seek bar is selected, and for that you need your mouse. You can then use the Tab key to move between the controls. The right/left arrows allow you to move a video 5 seconds forward or backwards. The up/down keys let you increase or decrease the volume. The Home/End keys let you move to the start or end of the video, while the spacebar lets you pause/play the video. There’s a whole host of missing shortcuts, including something that would let you quickly visit one of the suggested videos.
YouTube keyboard shortcuts
For those that are just discovering these shortcuts, enjoy the convenience they lend. Meanwhile, let’s all hope both YouTube and Facebook overhaul the options they have on offer.

How To Root Samsung Galaxy S III I9300 [Guide]

at 18:14
The Galaxy S III gets rooted before launch! Just a few days back, recognized developer Chainfire over at XDA-Developers released the news to Android fans that he has managed to gain root access on the device, but since the insecure kernel being used to root the device was traceable back to the source of the leak, the kernel was not released. Not anymore! Chainfire has finally released all that is required for eager users awaiting their Galaxy S IIIs, to root the device. The monster of a phone that defied all Apple lawsuits questioning Samsung’s hardware and OS design, is ready to make its mark in the world of Android, and this early root access, has positioned the device for making a major impact. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on an SGS III, read on for a detailed guide on how you can root the phone.

Galaxy S III Root GuideAccording to Chainfire, the modification of the kernel was not as easy as done for the SGS I, SGS II, and SG Note, because, “…this time around, Samsung is using the standard boot.img format, instead of the zImage format used for SGS1, SGS2, SGNote, etc, that is much harder to repackage.”
This time around, the SGS III also has a separate Recovery partition, and unlike its predecessors, a custom recovery can now be flashed independent of the kernel.
As for the warning triangle at boot up, there was none after the modified kernel was flashed, but Download Mode did show a kernel flash counter, which increased. It is unknown whether or not flashing a custom recovery will increase this counter or not. Please do note that this method has not been tested on an actual SGS II yet.
Disclaimer: Please attempt this guide at your own risk. Techdroids won’t be responsible in case your device gets bricked or damaged in any other way due to this method.
Requirements:
Instructions:
  1. To begin, download the insecure kernel and extract the file to find a TAR file.
  2. Download the root package and extract the contents.
  3. Put the phone in download mode. Hold down the Volume Down key, Home key and Power key and when prompted, press Volume Down to enter download mode.
  4. Run ODIN and click PDA to select the TAR file you extracted from the insecure kernel zip package.
  5. Now connect the phone to the PC via USB and when you see the device connected in ODIN, hit the Start button in ODIN to begin the flashing.
  6. Once the phone reboots, make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
  7. Connect the phone to PC again if you disconnected it, and run install.bat found in the root package you extracted earlier on.
The phone will reboot once again, and once done, you will have a rooted Galaxy S III. For updates and queries, head over to the forum thread at XDA-Developers.

Follow 2012 London Olympic Games With NBC Olympics & NBC Olympics Live Extra [Android, iOS]

at 18:04
Having an Android or iPhone can really go a long way towards satiating your hunger for sporting knowledge. In recent years, it has become the norm for major sporting events to have their official iOS apps accompanying them. Being a fan of several sports myself, I was pretty satisfied with the Euro 2012 and Wimbledon apps for iPhone. The next big thing on the sporting calendar is the Olympics, and if you are looking for a decent app for the London games, NBC just made life a lot better for you with the release of NBC Olympics and NBC Olympics Live Extra. As can be expected, the apps are available for both Android and iOS. Although the official app for the Olympic games has been released, too (by the name of “London 2012”), the NBC apps will let you view all the events live on your iPhone or Android device! You will need to be a subscriber of any cable network in order to get the videos and streams, but even if you don’t have that, the apps have a lot on offer. We’ll take a look at both of them just past the fold.

NBC Olympics

NBC Olympics Home NBC Olympics News NBC Olympics Trending Sports
Before we dive into all praise for the app, let’s discuss some of the negatives. The app is a bit slow, and the interface is not as smooth as you would expect from an official NBC app (feels like a wrapper for a web interface in some places). However, when you look at all that is on offer in the NBC Olympics app, we can live with a little lag in the interface. The top bar on the main page of the app features the latest news and videos related to the games, and you can view each item’s details by just tapping it once. The Top News menu will keep you up to date with all the latest happenings in London 2012. NBC Olympics comes with Facebook, Twitter and Google+ integration, and you can share any news story over these networks with a single touch.
NBC Olympics Videos NBC Olympics Athletes
If you want to watch any of the videos available within the app, you will have to link your cable account with it. This can be done in the app’s Settings menu, and almost all major service providers in the US are supported. Videos can be filtered by category, popularity or sports. The NBC Olympics app has a dedicated menu for Team USA that acts as a hub for all the latest news, photos, videos and schedules for each event in which USA is involved. In case you are looking for information on a particular participant of the game, go to the Athletes section and perform the necessary search. The app will come up with a complete profile of the player.

NBC Olympics Live Extra

NBC Olympics Live Extras NBC Olympics Live Extras Sports
While the NBC Olympics app is all about providing you with all the relevant content for London 2012, Live Extra is the app you will need if you want to actually watch any of the events live on your smartphone. As discussed for the Olympics app, you will need to have an account for any cable provider in order to enjoy the functionality offered by NBC Olympics Live Extra. The app does not have any of the bells and whistles that are attached to the NBC Olympics app, and it is strictly about live streaming. There are fixture lists and schedules for all sports, but that’s about it, and you will see a list of channels and live events once the games start. Live Extra can also send you reminders whenever an event of your favorite sport is about to start. To configure these reminders, go to the Sports section of the app from the top bar, and hit the heart icon next to the name of the sport. That game will be added to your reminder list.
NBC Olympics and NBC Olympics Live Extra are free apps, though ad-supported, and available for both iOS (as universal apps) and Android. If you are living outside the US, you might not be able to download the apps.

Microsoft Surface – A Windows 8 Tablet

at 18:09
Looking for an alternative to the iPad that can run your Windows software? Meet Microsoft Surface, a tablet that runs on Windows 8.
Forget everything you know about Microsoft Surface as it is no longer an expensive coffee table with a touch screen that you could have expected to see in hotel lobbies. Microsoft Surface is now a 10.6” consumer tablet – much like the iPad – and it runs on Windows 8.

Microsoft Surface – A Windows 8 Tablet

The Microsoft Hardware unit has so far limited itself to designing keyboards, mice, and other computer accessories but this is probably the first time that they have designed a consumer computer tablet in-house. The build quality of existing Microsoft hardware is top-notch and if these press photos are any indication, the new “Post PC” device should be no different.
The details are too thin to compare this Windows 8 tablet with the iPads and the Galaxy Tabs but few things stand out.
Unique features
The Surface tablet runs on Windows 8 and hence you should be able to use any of your existing software on the tablet.
The included USB port will help you connect devices – like the external hard drives, USB microphones, digital cameras, or USB modems – without requiring “special” accessories. The touch cover (image) doubles as a keyboard with a built-in track pad.
Pen Input for Handwriting
The tablet editions of previous versions of Windows had excellent handwriting recognition capabilities. The Surface Tablet ships with a pen and features “palm block” meaning when the pen tip is touching the screen, it would ignore the touch of the palm and the fingers. Surface could turn out to be a great writing device albeit less heavy.
Availability
Microsoft says that Surface would be made available around the same time as Windows 8 so the release date is likely to be October or November this year. The units will initially be sold only in the Microsoft Stores in U.S. and there’s no word on pricing yet.

Who doesn’t know about Wikipedia ? It is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopaedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia currently supports content in 260 different languages and there are over 75,000 authors on Wikipedia, responsible for constantly maintaining and adding to the site’s database.
The pages of Wikipedia are under constant supervision by over 1,500 administrators. The problem with this is that when a person edits a page’s content with new information that has yet to be released to the public, said information is removed.
For example, when searching for an “Episode Guide” for your favourite television show, you’ll often find 10 to 20 future episodes and their descriptions; however, the administrators will remove all of the future episodes except for the one that airs the following week.
Most of the articles on Wikipedia can be edited by users that haven’t even registered an account on the site.

Free Karaoke Software to Remove Vocals from Songs & Extract Music

at 15:13
so you want to impress your friends with your ability to sing, but only like to listen to boring old top 40 songs, and the new Karaoke machine you just bought is broken. What can you do? Is all lost? NO! Do not do anything drastic! There’s still hope – Introducing AnalogX Vocal Remover!

Remove Vocals from Songs: Free Karaoke Software to Extract only Music

AnalogX Vocal Remover works on the same principles that hardware removers do – that in most instances vocals are equally mixed in both channels, and can be identified and therefore removed by simply changing the phase on one channel 180 degrees. Although this does not remove vocals in all cases, works in many cases, and sometimes can be used to remove bass or break beat sections as well, which I find very good for sampling! Depending on the effects used on vocals, sometimes the reverb or ambience of the voice.
Remove Vocals from Songs: Free Karaoke Software
To use DirectX Vocal Remover, your application must support DirectX Audio Plugins, and must also be compatible with any real time or non real-time processing (such as Paris, Cakewalk, WaveLab, CoolEdit, etc.) Vocal Remover REQUIRES a flow stereo sound and supports 16-bit or 32-bit or data types.

CyanogenMod 9.0 RC1 released for 50 devices

at 05:39

The CyanogenMod 9.0 has been in the works for quite a long time now but it seems it is only a matter of time now before the final version gets released. But before we get there, the CyanogenMod team has decided to release the first Release Candidate today, that includes support for 50 devices.

The difference between this update and the previous nightlies is that the OS has now been stabilized, meaning any further developments will focus on adding support for new devices rather than improving the OS itself.
The list of devices currently supported include devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, Captivate, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, LG Nitro HD, Optimus Sol, ASUS EeePad Transformer, Transformer Prime, Sony Xperia ray, Xperia mini, Xperia active, HTC Sensation and many more.

Google Nexus 7 is now official, comes in July for $199

at 05:36

Google officially unveiled the Nexus 7 tablet at the Google I/O Developer Conference in San Francisco. Manufactured by ASUS, this is Google's first take on a tablet of their own brand.

As the name suggests, the Google Nexus 7 features a 7" IPS display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The tablet is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chip with 1GB of RAM and 12 core ultra-low voltage nVidia GeForce GPU.
And despite the capable hardware, Google managed to keep the price of the Nexus 7 impressively low. The slate will come in 8GB and 16GB flavors, which will retail for $199 and $249 respectively.
The Google Nexus 7 comes with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity and Google Wallet preinstalled. Sadly, there isn’t a 3G model available, but obviously keeping the price as low as possible was key here. That's also the reason there isn't a camera at the back, and only a 1.2MP front-facing snapper. However, it's capable of shooting 720p video, so it's not all bad.
Measuring 198.5 x 120 x 10.5 mm, the 7-incher weighs in at 340 grams which is respectful for its size. The Amazon Kindle Fire and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will be having a hard time, indeed.
Here's the promo video of the Google Nexus 7.
The Google Nexus 7 is available for pre-order right now in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK and will start shipping mid-July. An 8GB version will cost $199, and $249 for the 16GB model.

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III review.

at 05:23

Introduction

Today is no ordinary day for the GSMArena test track, which is about to see the Bugatti Veyron of smartphones do the rounds in an attempt to beat the lap record of its predecessor. Samsung have spared no effort to protect the Galaxy S III against any odds. What we get as a result is the most amazing blend of performance and features we are likely to see this year.

Samsung Galaxy S III official shots
The Koreans took their time with the new flagship, giving the predecessor a full year at the helm. But they were taking no chances and they've got the spec sheet to prove it. With most of the hardware made by Samsung themselves, the Galaxy S III is an endless list of mind-blowing numbers. The quad-core beast packs a 720p Super AMOLED screen and a massive battery, but keeps its slim waistline.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Here's the underwater part:read more for key features and much more..

Android 4.1, Jelly Bean: The world’s most popular platform gets even better .

at 05:12

Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, is the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet. Jelly Bean improves on the simplicity and beauty of Android 4.0, and introduces a new Google search experience on Android.

 Fast & smooth

With buttery graphics and silky transitions. We put Android under a microscope, making everything feel fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book.
More reactive and uniform touch responses mean you can almost feel the pixels beneath as your finger moves across the screen. Jelly Bean makes your Android device even more responsive by boosting your device’s CPU instantly when you touch the screen, and turns it down when you don’t need it to improve battery life.

Simple, beautiful and beyond smart

Expandable, actionable notifications.

Android has always put you in control when it comes to staying notified and connected. Now you can take action directly from the notifications shade. Late for a meeting? Email everyone to let them know. Missed a call? Call them back in an instant. And because they’re expandable, you can get an even deeper look into the things that matter most, like multiple emails or photos on Google+.

Widgets work like magic.

With Jelly Bean it’s now even easier to personalize your home screen. As you place widgets on the screen, everything else automatically moves to make room. When they’re too big, widgets resize on their own. Interacting with your favorite apps and customizing your home screen has never been easier.
